Phoebe Sumter Medical Center to host 2nd Annual Men's Health Conference on Saturday, September 18th
More than 500 men are expected to participate in this event
Americus, GA (September 9, 2010) -- In recognition of September being National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Phoebe Sumter Medical Center will host its 2nd Annual Men's Health Conference. The theme for this year's event is Gentlemen, Check Your Engines, basically asking men to put as much emphasis on what's inside their bodies as they do with what's under the hood of their vehicles.
This event is scheduled for Saturday, September 18th, 2010 from 8 am to 1 pm at the Student Success Center, which is on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University. More than 500 men participated last year, and that number or more are expected this year as well. The event will include the following free health screenings: PSA, Cholesterol, Diabetes and Blood Pressure. In addition to the screenings, participants will have an opportunity to hear two keynote speakers: Orthopedic Surgeon John Fennessy, M.D. (Trauma: An Easy Way to Bring a Good Man Down) and Urologist Rex Ajayi, M.D. , who will discuss way for men to improve their sex life and there will be "Ask the Doctor" sessions with Urologist Patrick Omess.
Lunch will be served and there will be door prizes as well. Participants that complete all of the tests will also receive a free t-shirt. All men who plan on attending are asked to fast after midnight the night before to ensure that the blood tests are accurate.
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer. Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in men, after lung cancer and colorectal cancer. While 1 man in 6 will get prostate cancer during his lifetime, only 1 man in 34 will die of this disease.
The death rate for prostate cancer has dropped the past few years, and the disease is being found earlier as well. However, the odds of surviving this disease improve dramatically with early detection, and as a result the death rate in America from prostate cancer continues to decline as the disease is being found earlier.
The American Cancer Society believes that doctors should offer the PSA blood test and DRE (digital rectal exam) yearly, beginning at age 50 to men who do not have any major medical problems and can be expected to live at least 10 more years. Men at high risk should begin testing at age 40. Men at high risk include African Americans and men who have a close relative (father, brother, or son) who had prostate cancer before age 65.
For more information on the upcoming screening, please call (229) 924-6011 ext 12110.
